Hi Ronaldo,

I loved your comments! and I agree with you but I would like to increase this discuss if you allow me.
In your case you've been fiding the ideal environment to learn english at your own country and you continue living in it until today.
When I started my english learning I thought I would be able to communicate proficiently after two or three years, by the way, it was the course promise, but, I discovered that in generally there are in Brazil no ways to do this, because you need to start in the basic level, to study grammar strongly to understand the language structure and finally to develop your listen and speach hability or in the order view, learn as a child, listenning, speaking and after all to writing and reading. Unfortunatelly, there are a few english school in Brazil with a solid, serious and honest pedagogic project, among them is Casa Thomas Jefferson.
I don't have doubt if a child or a teenager start his english study at Casa Thomas Jefferson, after eigth or nine years he will be proficient in english, but if you are plus old like me it's very more difficult.
Your mind it'll be closing for learning and it'll be full of fears and convictions when you are 30 years old or plus, so a immersion abroad it'll be usefull to open your mind for the language, allow you to demystify your fears and really to accelerate your learning.
Well, this is my theory, I don't want to be the "truth's owner".
Why I believe on it? I started learning english since 1999 when I was 34 years old, the worst, I started it by Wisdom and Wizard English Course! After three years I realized that I didn't know to communicate in english so I discovered a great school called Lennox located in Anglican church from Asa Sul, but the pedagogic project of that school is focused in to start listenning and speaking in order to develop a perfect pronunciation and finally to learn reading and writing. At this time I was 38 years old so I interrupted my english lessons to make a Master degree.
After two years and half when I was already 41 years old and thristy to learn english I decided to start everything again, at this time in a right way. I've enrolled at Casas Thomas Jeferson since 2006 and now I feel me ready to face a imersion in Canada to really acelerate my growing up in english.

It a simple reflection for us, let me ask you somethings:
1) How old was you when you started english at Casa Thomas Jefferson;
2) How many years did you study english at Casa Thomas Jefferson.

I hope you've understood my point of view.

Best regards,

Celso Arrais

Hi Celso!

You're building quite a page here, congrats!

Well, the only thing I can say about living abroad is that I have never done it...
Of course I would love to have this experience (and I'm currently planning on taking my PhD abroad, hopefully next year...), but I believe my never living abroad can be positive.
Let me explain, I'm an English teacher in Brazil (at Casa Thomas Jefferson), and I am a living testimony that you don't necessarily NEED to live abroad in order to acquire proficiency in a language (many Brazilian students believe this...). You can also do it by attending classes in your own country and doing some extra practice on your own (like you're doing here with Ning). I'm proud to say that all my English is Casa Thomas Jefferson English and it got me to where I am right now.

Kindest regards!

Just great, Celso! I loved your ideas and will certainly add to the "living abroad" experience and can invite friends to join us. What I like about Ning is the fact that we have our group common areas, plus the individual places where you keep your own gems!

Great to see you back full of energy and ideas.

Let's keep moving and learning!

Waiting for you.

Olá, Celso.

I'm delighted to be in this wonderful group with you!

I'm fascinated by your career area—Forensics.

One of my favorite authors, Patricia Cornwell, has a forensic examiner as the main character in many of her novels. Learn more about Patricia Cornwell's books by clicking HERE.

Best wishes from Phoenix—

Dennis
